Alienation

That feeling that your life doesn't belong to you — because under capitalism, it kind of doesn't. Marx had a word for it.


You Already Know What This Feels Like

You've had a job where you clocked in, did the thing, clocked out, and felt absolutely nothing. Maybe worse than nothing — like the hours spent there subtracted something from you. Like you walked in as a person and walked out as a husk who now has to recover from having been at work before doing it all again tomorrow.

That's alienation. Marx just gave it a name and explained why it keeps happening.

The Four Ways It Hits

Alienation isn't just one thing. It operates on four levels, and they're all connected:

1. You're alienated from what you make. You spend your day producing things — reports, code, lattes, whatever — and none of it belongs to you. It belongs to someone else. The more you produce, the richer they get, and the more powerless you feel. You built the thing, but it's not yours. It never was.

2. You're alienated from the work itself. The activity of working doesn't feel like self-expression or creativity. It feels like something being extracted from you. You're not working because you want to — you're working because you'll starve if you don't. The work is just a means to a paycheck, which is just a means to rent, which is just a means to surviving long enough to do it again.

3. You're alienated from what makes you human. Here's the thing that's actually kind of devastating: the ability to create, to imagine, to build something on purpose — that's supposed to be what makes us us. That's the species-level thing. But capitalism takes that capacity and reduces it to a survival mechanism. Your creative potential gets funneled into making someone else's spreadsheet more profitable.

4. You're alienated from each other. When every relationship is mediated by money — when you relate to other people primarily as customers, competitors, or resources — something important dies. You stop seeing people and start seeing transactions.

Here's the kicker: these aren't four separate problems. They're four faces of the same problem. And the root of all of it is self-alienation — being cut off from your own possibilities by the very system you participate in every day.

Where the Idea Comes From

Marx didn't invent this concept from scratch. Hegel got there first, in his own weird, galaxy-brained way — he thought alienation was baked into the structure of reality itself, that the universe basically alienates itself in order to know itself. It's a whole thing.

Then Feuerbach came along and said something much simpler and more dangerous: God isn't a real being that humans are alienated from. God is a projection — humans took their own best qualities, imagined them as belonging to some higher being, and then knelt before their own creation. Religion is the original self-alienation.

Marx thought Feuerbach was onto something but didn't go far enough. Sure, religion is one way we alienate ourselves. But we also do it with money, with property, with the state, with law, with every institution that starts as a human creation and ends up ruling over us like it has a life of its own.

It's Not Just in Your Head

There's a version of this conversation where someone tells you alienation is just a feeling — a psychological state, a mood, something a therapist can help with. And look, therapy is great. But alienation isn't just about feeling estranged. It's about being estranged.

It's an objective condition. The products of your labor really do belong to someone else. The system really does treat you as a means to someone else's profit. You're not imagining it. The gaslighting is that anyone ever told you this was normal.

The most useful way to think about it: social alienation and personal alienation are two sides of one coin. You can't fix one without the other. Individual self-help won't change the structure, and structural change won't automatically heal the psyche. You need both.

So How Do You Un-Alienate?

For Marx, naming alienation was never the point. The point was to build a world where it stops happening.

That means more than just changing who owns the factory. Turning private property into state property doesn't cut it — ask anyone who lived under a system that did exactly that whether they felt less alienated. The problem goes deeper than ownership documents.

Real de-alienation means people actually controlling their own work, their own communities, their own lives. It means the products of collective labor actually being collective. It means relating to each other as human beings rather than as walking price tags.

It's ambitious. It's also the whole point.
