Labor

The thing that makes us human — conscious, purposeful activity that transforms the world. Also the thing capitalism steals from you eight hours a day.


Before Anything Else

Before there was philosophy, politics, art, religion, or TikTok — there was labor. Before humans could do anything, they had to eat, drink, find shelter, and not die. The very first historical act is the production of the means to stay alive. This isn't a one-time event. It's the condition that has to be met daily, as much now as it was ten thousand years ago.

Labor is the foundation. Everything else is built on top of it.

What Makes It Human

Every animal works in some sense. Bees build hives. Spiders weave webs. Beavers construct dams. But none of them decide to do it. They don't sit there imagining the dam before they start building.

Humans do. That's the difference.

The worst architect, Marx says, is still fundamentally different from the best bee — because the architect raises the structure in their imagination before building it in reality. Human labor is conscious and purposeful. You imagine a result, then you work toward it. You impose your will on raw material and transform it into something that didn't exist before.

And here's the part that's actually beautiful: by changing the world through labor, you also change yourself. You develop capacities you didn't know you had. You learn, adapt, grow. Labor isn't just something you do to the world — it's something that makes you who you are.

Which is exactly why it's so devastating when that process gets hijacked.

The Three Ingredients

Every labor-process, no matter how simple or complex, has three elements:

  1. You — your physical and mental activity, your purposeful effort
  2. The stuff you work on — raw materials, whether found in nature or already shaped by someone else's labor
  3. The tools you use — everything from a hammer to a laptop to a factory floor

When you look at the finished product, both the raw materials and the tools count as means of production. And the labor that went into it? That's productive labor.

Here's what happens in the process: the movement that was in you — your effort, your energy, your intention — now exists in the product as a fixed quality. The blacksmith forges, and the result is a forging. Your labor disappears into the thing you made. It's materialized, frozen into an object.

Then Capitalism Enters the Chat

Under capitalism, the labor-process acquires two features that change everything:

First, you work under someone else's control. From the moment you step into the workplace, your labor belongs to your employer. They decide what you make, how you make it, how fast you make it. That conscious, purposeful activity that defines human labor? It's now subordinated to someone else's purpose. You're still the one doing the imagining and the making, but the why and the what for have been outsourced.

Second, the product belongs to someone else. This is the one that stings. You made the thing. Your labor is literally materialized in it. But it's not yours. It belongs to the person who purchased your labor-power — your capacity to work — for the day.

Think about what that means. The capitalist buys your labor-power the way someone rents a horse for the day. The use of the horse belongs to the renter. Your labor — your actual human activity — belongs to your employer from the instant you clock in. They incorporate your living effort into dead materials to produce something they own and you don't.

From their perspective, the whole labor-process is just the consumption of a commodity they bought. They add labor to raw materials the way a winemaker adds yeast to grape juice. The wine belongs to the winemaker. The product belongs to the boss.

The Distance Between Then and Now

There was a time — a very long time, actually — when human labor was just people figuring out how to survive, together. It was personal, communal, directly connected to the needs it was meeting.

Now? There's an immeasurable distance between that and a world where people bring their labor-power to market and sell it like any other commodity. That capacity for conscious, creative, purposeful transformation — the thing that makes us distinctly human — has itself become something bought and sold on the open market.

The labor-process is universal. It's the condition of human existence in any society. But the form it takes — who controls it, who benefits from it, who gets to keep the product — is historical. It can be different. It has been different. The fact that it looks like this right now is not a law of nature.

It's an arrangement. And arrangements can be rearranged.
